Our church operates with the generous co-operation of volunteers from our congregation. Sign up lists are located on the bulletin board in the fellowship hallway next to the church office. We need people to usher, light candles before each service, provide refreshments for fellowship hour and be the liturgist assisting our pastor with the Sunday Service. If you have a gift that you would like to share with the church, please add your name to one of the lists, or all three!!

A
HOLY LAND 2023-24
There is still room for more pilgrims and the deposit deadline has been extended to July 15! This trip was designed to repeat some of the beloved places (Sea of Galilee, Bethlehem, Jacob’s Well, and others) with specific attention to the women in the Bible. This Holy Land experience is open to all who seek to hear the often-hidden voices of the women of the Bible. We will visit sites that will remind us of stories that stretch from Sarah all the way to the women of the gospels. From the tombs of Sarah and Rachel to the Samaritan Woman’s well, and the women at the tomb of Jesus, we will travel from north to south. Crossing into Jordan, we will go to Petra and remember Herod Antipas’ first Nabatean wife. We will also meet and engage with Christian, Muslim and Jewish women who work for peace and inclusion in Palestine and Israel. Stops will be made to remember all 5 of the women named in Jesus’ genealogy. We will renew our baptism at the Jordan. Each day we will worship together, celebrating communion in Jerusalem and a closing dinner. There will even be time to pamper yourself a bit at some spa hotels. This journey will provide an amazing way to hear the Christmas season bells and ring in the New Year!
TRAVEL DATES: December 28th, 2023 - Jan 9th, 2024. COSTS: $3325 (per person-double) $4305 (per person single) plus airfare (estimated to be around $1300)
REGISTRATION: A fully refundable $500 deposit payable to JFPC by JULY 15, 2023. (Mark check for Holy Land 2023-24.) Final payment of $2825 (double) $3805 (single) due October 7, 2023
Make sure to save the 1st Saturday in December for the JFPC Christmas Bazaar. Baked goods, vendors and a luncheon are on the menu for that day.

How long will Pastor Lynne be gone? Pastor Lynne will be on sabbatical from June 1-September 5. Her last Sunday before sabbatical is May 28. She will return to the pulpit Sunday, September 10. Where Did This Come From? According to JFPC’s Terms of Call, and in accordance with the policies of our denomination and Presbytery, the church gives the pastor a three-month paid renewal leave every 5 to 7 years to rest, renew and reimagine. While on sabbatical, the pastor takes a complete break from their pastoral role: they do not lead worship, funerals, weddings, or baptisms or take part in any administrative responsibilities. Afterward, the pastor’s return becomes an intentional period of energizing the ongoing partnership with the congregation, as both pastor and congregation share what they have learned in their time apart. The sabbatical , then, isn’t a “vacation from ministry” but rather an active part of an effective ministry. Much like the body needs regular rest to function properly, the soul also requires intentional down time for recharging and renewal. Why do we offer this? Full-time ministry is demanding, and few people recognize the spiritual and physical toll it takes on a pastor. Lifeway Research reports that 1700 pastors leave the ministry every month! 80% of pastors feel discouraged in their roles. 50% say they would leave the ministry if they could, but have no other way of making a living. 80% of seminary and Bible school graduates leave the ministry within the first 5 years. 70% of pastors constantly fight depression. Only 1 out of 10 pastors retire as a pastor. The most common reason for this exodus is burnout. These statistics are not shared to complain about how tough it is to be a pastor. Your encouragement and support make it a joy and blessing for Pastor Lynne to serve (our staff knows how good we have it–our church truly is amazing!). AND….It’s a big job, and that’s why God established the sabbath. God the Creator first modeled the sabbath in Genesis 2:2-3, ceasing work on the seventh day to rest. Jesus also modeled the sabbath when He went off many times to be alone with the Father. He then commanded his disciples to “come away and rest” as a part of ministry. We offer Sabbatical as a Biblical response to caring for our pastor so they can care for themselves, continue to grow spiritually, and consequently better care for us. Why now? Clergy sabbaticals are typically taken every 5-7 years. This will be Pastor Lynne’s first sabbatical in her 15 years of ordained ministry. Pastor Lynne accepted her call to JFPC in lieu of a sabbatical at her previous congregation, and this sabbatical, delayed because of the pandemic, was a part of Pastor Lynne’s Terms of Call from the time of her hire

In 2023 Jonesville First Presbyterian Church
will celebrate an anniversary (170 years since
our first church building was erected, and
145? years since we have been in our current
building). We would love to compile a col-
lection of photos of our church throughout the
years. If you happen to have wedding pic-
tures, Sunday School photos, or others of our
church from earlier years – different paint
colors, before the Fellowship Hall wing was
added, etc, we would love to make copies of
them!

Welcome to 2023

– Spiritually Prepare for Lent – A Healthier Body of Christ February, 2022 Page 2 As our Sunday worship scriptures have reminded us, we are the body of Christ. Many of us would like our physical bodies to be healthier. So, throughout the Season of Lent, typically a season of self-denial and repentance, we will be offering opportunities for our congregation to become a healthier body of Christ – spiritually, of course, but also physically. What does this mean or look like? That will be up to you. Let Pastor Lynne know if your goals center around healthier eating, increased exercise, weight loss, drinking more water, or something else. We’ll design the program from the input we receive. Perhaps you’ve heard about the special tv series “The Chosen” and wondered what it was all about. Maybe you haven’t even heard of it. The Chosen is a series that tells the Gospel stories from the perspectives of the followers of Jesus. The producers have gone to great lengths to be authentic and compelling. During Lent we will offer a study to watch the episodes and discuss them together. Come and see!

Grief Group Our congregation has suffered significant losses in the past couple of years. Many in our midst are grieving – the loss of loved ones, jobs, relationships, health. If you are in grief, (over anything), you are invited to JFPC’s Grief Group. We have no curriculum, no agenda, no purpose other than to listen, to support each other, and to offer a safe place to grieve openly. We will meet Wednesdays at 1:15pm.
